Hot-forming
BVV manufactures the following products by hot forming in forging and rolling facilities: railway wheels, wheel tyres for rail vehicles, and rings. The hot forming takes place in several steps that include sawing, heating, forging, rolling, calibration, marking, inspection, heat treatment, testing and release.
Sawn ingots are firstly heated to forging temperature and then fed to the forging press, which forms a wheel blank with a maximum pressing force of approx. 6,000 tonnes.
The wheel blanks are subsequently rolled to their rough dimensions in the wheel rolling mill. They take on their final form in a 2,000 tonne press, after which they are marked with their identification number in a marking machine. A fully automatic dimensional inspection by a laser measuring machine rounds off the production process.
Wheel tyres and rings are produced on a second production line.
After undergoing a pre-forming process, the wheel tyre and ring blanks are given their required rolled dimensions on a ring rolling machine.
Heat treatment
Monobloc wheels and wheel tyres
In our fully automatic heat treatment line the material for the railway wheels and wheel tyres is optimised in continuous mode through controlled annealing and cooling procedures to impart the requisite mechanical properties.
Wheel centres and rings
Special bogie hearth furnaces are installed for the heat treatment of these products because of the special materials utilised for the disk wheel bodies and the particular variety of materials used for the rings. These furnaces make it possible to keep within all the parameters required in the customer's material specifications.
